ESA report from Mozambique Beach Safari

Dear Mozambique Beach Safari boogie people - ESA family!

Home again boasting suntanned skin in rainy Europe - and washing out the last pristine sand between the toes. But most important - full of fond memories created by a fantastic group of international people who came, saw and conquered.

14 to16NOV. Embarking on the adventure took us to three different worlds. Pilanesberg Safari Park with moderate temperature and mesmerizing wild life. The buffet at Kwa Maritane Lodge spoiled us rotten and almost made us stay longer. A perception that could have become reality when the bus broke down and time was limited to catch the flight to Vilanculos. We had the boys on their backs with flashlights underneath the bus and with a good portion of positive vibes we were on our way - an hour late.  LAM AIR was too impatient to wait for ESA passengers who had initially booked the entire plane and Gary, Larissa, Bea and Schmassi stayed behind in Joburg for one night to test the food and accomodation here. Along with Natascha, Bruno and Gaby - Angus and Nikki were put through their first tormenting period of loosing baggage. With a new boogie t-shirt and a good portion of patience they all made it until the clean knickers arrived two days later.

16 to 23NOV. Vilanculos - the coast of Mozambique. We actually scheduled the boogie to meet the cyclone. We also made sure there was no running or hot water in the majority of chalets. This to separate the weak from the die-hards. Bravissimo! You all pulled together in immaculate team building sessions....at the bar. How else would we have stayed up to watch the sunrise, catch up on lyrics to Edgars karaoke tunes, invent the 'modern tango' and replace poor craftmanship of bar shelves. 'MOZAMBIQUE IS MY COUNTRY'!  (if in doubt - ask Jennifer). But we skydived for two full days and Vilanculos locals could not get enough of tandem jumping...

23 to 28NOV. Bazaruto Island. Paradise. Tranquility. Squeaky sand. Blue water. Immaculate dropzone. Scrumptious food. 5 days of skydiving. The early bird loads saw the sun before it rose on the horizon... ESA thanks Bazaruto Lodge who went out of its way to accomodate the group in every way. Derick's sand trucks and jeeps where in constant motion transporting us to and from the airport and the landing areas. The bar stayed open too... Nikki retreived her luggage again - this time only after a few hours...!

ESA realizes there was much waiting time between some loads and that sitting it out was necessary. Had we just 10 more jumpers we could have kept the Caravan on a back to back. Thank you all for your patience and going with the flow.
ESA is particularly proud of all the lower experienced skydivers who challenged the new landing areas with its obstacles and stress factors. You all proved yourself worthy. No accidents. No close encounters. Next time we will simply move the windblades for Thierry......:)  Jeanne worked her way out of a malfunctioning canopy giving the locals the pleasure of finding the free bag and returning both items to the lodge.

You all left your footprints on the island with donations to the children of Bazaruto. Eric de Coster equally donated his medical supplies.
Trust that it will make a difference as Mr. Louis Erasmus, the manager of the lodge, will allocate the funds properly. Our son Matt gave his soccer ball to one little boy who happened to pop out of the bush at the right moment during our transfer to the boat. This little boy was happier than a clam at high tide...

The adventure lasted until the end when the Caravan was delayed leaving Vilanculos and the trailor blew a tire whilst transporting all the luggage from Wonderboom to Johannesburg airport. Hans and Joost pulled their load with the explicite help of Manny who provided the transport and trailor. Stuck on the road just ten minutes before Tambo Airport the boys unloaded the punctured trailor and moved luggage in intervals with the car to the airport, where all 38 of you where awaiting their arrival with your bags in order to check in. Hans and Joost just barely made their own flight to Amsterdam. Hans, Joost and Manny - you rock! I understand that Nikki flew home without her bags....Nikki, we're so sorry. You need to talk to Murphy...

This boogie was particularly special for the ESA team. Our long time boogie doctor and friend - Eric de Coster - announced he was making his last jump. After 30 years of skydiving Eric made the emotional decision and we flew together on Eric's last skydive together with long time ESA team members Gaby, Bruno and Schmassi. But we are not worried, because ESA hereby promises that Eric will part of the team on future ESA events. We think he would make a great manifest bitch...

We also found a new partner and strengthened friendship.  Did you notice the belgium guy with the french accent on the beach checking the wind speed...?  Ronnie Limborg brought us to Mozambique. Ronnie unselfishly shared his discovery with Exotic Sky Adventures. Ronnie was our fundament. Ronnie is undefeatable -  and doesnt get thrown off course even when his cherí steps out at the wrong airport and he is forced to pay for a 4-hour taxi ride and sail from Bazaruto Island after sunset to pick her up...

Allthough we continue to explore new destinations and unjumped territory, we cannot deny that Bazaruto Island captured our soul. We now understand Ronnie's drive for having launched two previous boogies here. It is with the dedicated support from two distinguished gentlemen of Aeroclube de Mozambique we were able to skydive in this magnificent region.
Mr. Alves Gomes and Batista Condido arranged for all permits and notams and stood by our side during the entire event and equally carried us through emmigration and customs. Not only did they design and sponsor our goody bags, but with the hand carved dolphin souveniers, they made sure you took a piece of the Bazaruto's spirit home with you. Thank you gentlemen.

We acknowledge that everyone has their own story to tell and we hope to hear it. Exotic Sky Adventures thanks all of you who chose to spend your holiday with us and paid the price to travel to Mozambique. We never underestimate the faith you put in us to deliver an event worth your while. It is not without some sweat and tears that we pull through. After loosing the Kudu's, it was gruelling to have to raise the price of jump tickets, particularly for the first ten jumps already paid in the package. That was a message we had a hard time delivering and once again confronting during registration. Thank you. We now embrace the initial involuntary change of aircraft - as the situation introduced us to two amazing people - our pilots Yolanda and Heinrich - whom are our heroes. And whom we'd like to call our friends. Yolanda and Heinrich - we have you signed up for an AFF course on the next boogie!

Where and when the next boogie will be is shortly to be announced. This Mozambique adventure introduced new people and opportunities in our lives and we have opened an interesting door. We still have Philippines on the agenda, but yet to confirm. Another option is being put into action. Also in Asia.

Pictures have been placed on the Exotic Sky Adventures Facebook page. Please feel free to share your comments and pics with everyone here as well.
As we rest in the beautiful memories of our Mozambican adventure and slide into a new holiday season, we take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and more exotic adventures in 2010.

Exotic skies,
Karina and Herman
